3 days Basic Studio Lighting Seminar
I am always looking forward to attend a photography seminar and Ken Go’s Basic Studio Lighting is one that I eyed most. His monthly seminar is always not in sync with my schedule however this month I have finally made it. I was one of his 7 students that was eager to learn the beauty of using artificial lights or which he always called “available lights“.
The seminar runs for 3 days. The first day covers basically the introduction and the actual lecture. Day 2 was practical application of what we have learned on Day 1. Ken invited some models that will help us understand more of the concepts. And on the last day, it was time to show off what we have taken in Day 2. We were required to bring printed photos of our shots for a critique session where me and my fellow students will have to evaluate. Ken also gave us pointers and ideas on how we can improve our skills. Also on that same day, he showed us how to use the portable and wireless lighting setup — using portable flash systems like Nikon SB800.
Did I learn? Yes! And not only that, I also enjoyed the 3-day course. The session was very informative and very entertaining. The part that I liked most about the seminar is that, Ken was very kind to share his real life experiences on shooting.
Now, I can say that I know how to use the light meter, operate the studio lights, and I am able to setup lights position creatively and scientifically – and for those, thanks to Ken Go.
Here are some of the photos that I have taken on Day 2:
Model: Gina, Shot with Nikon D80 with 50mm 1.8
Model: Abby, Shot with Nikon D80 with 50mm 1.8
Model: Van, Shot with Nikon D80 with 50mm 1.8
All photos were straight out of the camera, I just resized and added border for Web layout. The last photo was converted to gray scale using the RAW conversion of Adobe Photoshop CS3.
Actually, I am not that satisfied with the photos that I have taken, however, I was very happy with the new knowledge I gained from setting up the lights and taking those shots.
Try to look at it. Guess how many lights there was and how it was setup. I will try to post the lights layout next time for those of you who are curious about how it was done. Hope it will show some interests on you on Studio Lighting and be sure to enroll on his class. ;) I guarantee that you will learn there the proper use of lights and much much more.

BTW, I am still far behind on my Project 52 postings. ;)
